Colombia: Government, ELN Reach Agreement to Begin Formal Peace Talks
Colombian government negotiators and representatives from the National Liberation Army (ELN), the country's second-largest leftist rebel movement, reached an agreement Jan. 18 to begin formal peace negotiations next month, Caracol Radio reported. The two sides will begin meeting Feb. 8 in Ecuador's capital of Quito. As part of the agreement to hold talks, the ELN agreed to release former congressman Odin Sanchez, while the government said it would pardon two ELN militants and agreed to allow two negotiators from the group to attend the talks. The government reached a historic peace deal with Colombia's largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, last year.
