A contemporary São Paulo hotel with a superb location
Hotel Unique’s elegant Jardins district setting is what makes it shine
Not everything about the Hotel Unique (www.hotelunique.com.br; from $333) in São Paulo’s elegant Jardins neighbourhood is what I’d call exceptional. The rooms are unabashedly contemporary-minimalist; the hallways are a bit too dark; the gym could probably use an upgrade. But as well as being woefully short on good hotels to begin with, São Paulo is also a city in which location really, really matters, and this is why I’ve chosen the Unique twice and would again. Before dawn breaks, I can exit the hotel and walk past pretty bungalows to the beautiful Parque Ibirapuera for my morning run, totally without fear (a massive USP for a woman travelling solo in Brazil). In the evenings, I like to meet friends forapéro at Skye, its rooftop bar, which might have one of the best views in town, as well as excellent drinks. The other standout here is the exceptional staff: youthful, multilingual and endlessly keen to please.
